The studio has had a face-lift inside with a new floor being laid over the holidays. After many hours of research it became obvious that I couldn’t afford the $30,000 or so that it would cost to have a new timber floor laid, so the next option was to seek information about the Tarkett Flooring used by professional dance companies. Tarkett is a commercial grade vinyl with a fancy name (this means it will cost more).
A trip to Mackay allowed me to see one of these floors in a dance studio and to see how it had held up to 400 students dancing on it for over 11 months. All appeared to be okay with only the odd gouge or mark.
Quotes were sought from various stores with the difference between buying locally and out of town being almost $3000. Needless to say, although I am a firm believer in buying locally when you can, the price difference was too great and a Mackay stockist was given the nod.
A hardwood masonite was laid first to make the floor smooth and then the vinyl over the top. It doesn’t sound exactly the same as before but with twenty or so children in the room, perhaps my eardrums won’t bleed anymore!!!!!
I will ask children to check the screws in their tap shoes on a regular basis to make sure we keep the floor as perfect as we can. Apart from the fact that there will be NO MORE SPLINTERS, we won’t have to use resin on the floor either..........YAY!!!!
