Arrival times:
Friday please arrive by 6pm
Saturday morning please arrive by 9.30am
Saturday evening please arrive by 5.30pm
Please use the toilets in the foyer, with costumes covered by a cape. You are welcome to use the toilets in the side-stage dressing rooms in an emergency, where a child really needs to go before going on stage and doesn't have time to go out the front.
Wings: Dancers should only enter the wings when the dance immediately before
their dance goes on stage. Two dances before their dance, they should line up on
the back stairs, making sure to leave a space in the middle so others can get
through. If you are in the way, don’t be surprised if a senior dancer in a big
hurry has to give you a push! Under no circumstances are dancers to stand around
the back door to the stage. This counts for juniors, intermediates, seniors,
everybody. Please make sure your child understands this important rule and stays
well back from this door until the dance immediately before theirs has gone on
stage, then file quietly into the wings. This is a problem every year and many
seem to think that this rule does not apply to them.....IT
DOES!
Backstage Noise and Traffic: Please be aware that there are only
glass doors and a curtain separating the audience from those in the side
dressing areas. Noise from backstage can easily be heard in the hall. It is easy
for us to forget this and raise our voices backstage. Please do not be offended
if someone reminds you or your child to keep it down. Discuss this with your
child beforehand and explain that all conversation in the dressing rooms, behind
the stage and especially in the wings needs to be in a low voice.
If you
are in the audience and notice that one of the curtains over the side exits has moved, allowing the
audience to see into the dressing room, please adjust the curtain to save
embarrassment to those getting changed backstage. It also stops unnecessary and distracting light from entering the auditorium.
Some families have
children performing in multiple dances with multiple costume changes. Often,
these have to be done in a hurry. Please be respectful of those with multiple
costume changes and leave a clear pathway through the dressing room at all
times.
Entering and exiting the hall during the show: During the
concert, parents are often needed backstage to assist with costume changes. Of
course, they also want to be in the audience enjoying the show. This can mean
they have to do lots of running between the dressing rooms and the
hall. It would be appreciated that when entering or exiting the hall
during the performance, you do so only in-between dances. It is very distracting
for the audience and the performers on stage if the rear doors are constantly
opening. Once the lights go down at the end of a dance you will have
enough time to make a quick exit without much interruption to the next
dance.
If you are waiting to enter the hall, please wait outside the
doors until you hear the dance finish and only then enter the hall and take your
seat.
Don’t stress: If you are organised, concert should be an enjoyable
experience. Make sure your child’s costumes are labelled and stored securely.
Some people find it easier to have each costume in its own bag with all
accessories so nothing gets forgotten. Be obsessive about making sure everything
goes back in the bag. Have a needle and thread and safety pins ready to deal
with any costume malfunctions. Don’t be late, allow plenty of time. If you are
having problems with your child’s hair, please ask another, more experienced
mother for advice. At Dee Jays, we all work together to make a fantastic experience for our kids and the audience.
